A checkout button can move through this cycle in days because reversal is cheap. A stair, medicine dispenser, or molded appliance control needs physical tolerances, edge cases, and production evidence. The calendar expands with consequence, not with the designer's appetite for polish.

Why doesn’t “form follows function” settle the tradeoff?

“Form follows function” is too blunt to settle a real design choice. A product usually serves several functions at once, and they can pull in opposite directions. A weighted total of 82 versus 79 is weak evidence if the three-point gap comes from subjective ratings. A small speed gain can be worth taking when errors remain at zero; it loses its appeal if one severe error appears.
