Can You Take Your Phone in a Sauna? What a Yes Costs

You can take your phone into a sauna. It will usually come out working, and that is the trap. Apple's published environmental requirements give every iPhone an operating ambient temperature of 0 to 35 °C, a non-operating limit of 45 °C, and relative humidity of 5 to 95 per cent, noncondensing. Harvia's PC70/PC90 heater manual calls 65–75 °C a suitable sauna room temperature. Clearlight's Sanctuary 5 manual puts a typical thirty-minute infrared session at 46–51 °C. ThermaSol puts a steam bath at 43–46 °C near 100 per cent humidity. All three rooms sit outside the phone's operating range and two outside its storage range. Apple and Samsung both name saunas and steam rooms in writing as places not to use the device. A yes is available. It is paid in battery capacity, seal life and warranty standing, and the invoice arrives late.

Nine years of running a scanning bureau taught me to read the block nobody reads. Every flatbed ships with an environmental requirements paragraph under the resolution figures, and no customer has ever opened one. Everybody cleans the glass. The dust that ruins the scan is on the underside of the lid, where it has sat since the machine left the factory. On a phone, the IP rating is the glass. The operating range is the underside of the lid.

The number that decides it

Apple has printed the same environmental requirements on every iPhone specifications page since the 5s, unchanged through the iPhone Air: operating ambient temperature 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C), non-operating temperature −4° to 113° F (−20° to 45° C), relative humidity 5% to 95% noncondensing. Samsung goes straight to the application, writing under its Galaxy water-resistance guidance: "Do not use the product in abnormal temperatures such as saunas and steam rooms, or in places with high humidity."

I read that 0–35 °C band on Apple's own pages. An identical Galaxy figure circulates in secondary write-ups and I could not find it on Samsung's support pages, so check your own model's manual.

Your venue may run hotter: Harvia's C90 control unit will take a room to 110 °C if asked. Read the wall display or the heater's manual, not a wellness-blog range.

Why water resistance is the wrong evidence

IP68 measures something real and is the wrong instrument here. Apple gives the conditions with the claim: IP68 under IEC standard 60529, maximum depth of 6 metres up to 30 minutes, for iPhone 12 and later. Samsung describes 1.5 m of fresh water for 30 minutes, "leaving it still, without any movement."

Now read the standard's own conditions. In the immersion procedure the water temperature must not differ from the equipment's by more than 5 K. That clause carries the whole argument. It exists to stop a warm specimen cooling in the water, forming a partial vacuum inside its enclosure and pulling water past its own seals.

A sauna is that condition on purpose, for twenty minutes. Your phone goes in far colder than the room, comes out far hotter than the corridor, and holds saturated air the whole time.

The standard does have a rating for hot vapour: IP69, or IP69K under ISO 20653, tested with 80 °C water at 80 to 100 bar. Food-processing equipment carries it. Passing IP68 implies nothing about passing it, and no consumer phone I know of holds it.

The companies that published IP68 also published the exclusion. Apple's splash and water resistance page lists "Using your iPhone in a sauna or steam room" among the things to avoid, on the same page as the rating, and notes that liquid damage is not covered under warranty. Apple also says its Liquid Contact Indicators are not designed to trigger on humidity and temperature within the product's environmental requirements. A steam room is outside them.

Three rooms, three failure modes

Traditional sauna: heat alone

Harvia's 65–75 °C is around twice the phone's operating ceiling and 20 to 30 °C above the 45 °C storage limit, which applies to a device switched off and doing nothing. ThermaSol's comparison puts dry sauna humidity at 10 to 20 per cent, so heat is the whole problem here.

The dryness is intermittent anyway: a ladle on the rocks throws vapour to bench height. Sauna air is stratified too, and the floor by the door is cooler than the top bench, though never down to 35 °C in any I have used.

Infrared cabin: cooler, still too hot

Infrared invites the assumption that it heats the body rather than the air, so the cabin must be gentle. Clearlight's Sanctuary 5 owner's manual settles it: "During a typical 30-minute session, the air temperature will reach between 115-125°F (46-51°C)." The panel programs to a maximum of 175 °F (80 °C).

Read the low end. Forty-six degrees is above the iPhone's 45 °C storage ceiling, so the gentlest session in that manual exceeds what Apple specifies for a phone powered down in a drawer.

Steam room: the coolest and the worst

ThermaSol calls 110–115 °F, roughly 43–46 °C, the proper temperature for a steam bath, at humidity near 100 per cent. That is the lowest air temperature of the three and the room I would refuse outright.

At saturation the dew point equals the air temperature. A phone carried in from a 22 °C changing room sits more than twenty degrees below it, so vapour condenses into liquid water on every surface it reaches: speaker mesh, microphone holes, charging port, seams, the camera stack. That is deposition rather than splashing, everywhere at once. Apple's specification word is noncondensing; a steam room is condensing by design. A second dose lands on the way out, when the warm saturated air trapped inside cools.

What the heat changes

Apple names 16 to 22 °C as the battery's ideal comfort zone and says to "avoid exposing your device to ambient temperatures higher than 95° F (35° C), which can permanently damage battery capacity." A sauna runs at roughly three times the top of that zone.

The readout is Battery Health, and the number is Maximum Capacity. Apple designs iPhone 14 and earlier batteries to retain 80 per cent of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles, and iPhone 15 and later at 1,000 cycles, both under ideal conditions. That qualifier is where sauna trips get charged. Heat subtracts nothing visible on the day; it bends the curve, and you meet it as a percentage months later.

The device also defends itself. Beyond the operating range Apple lists charging that slows or stops, a display that dims or goes black, weakened cellular signal, disabled camera features and reduced performance, then a temperature warning screen that locks the phone until it cools. The timer you carried in is among the first things to go dark.

Heat works on the seals too. IP69K is a hard test partly because heat softens gaskets before the water arrives, and both Apple and Samsung state that water resistance decreases with wear. Each visit anneals the adhesive holding the rating that talked you into going.

Prints tell the same story in my trade. The ones from an attic were never damaged the week I open the box; the curl and the yellow shift happened across summers nobody was watching. My own family's negatives are still in a drawer, nine years on.

Why there is no safe number of minutes

The ten-minute rule is the thing I am most often asked to bless, and I cannot. Room temperature, humidity, ventilation, the phone's starting temperature, whether it came off a charger, whether it is buried in a towel, and the model itself all move the outcome. No manufacturer publishes a time-to-warning figure, because there is no single figure to publish.

The rooms' own manuals stretch the exposure past what people picture. MrSteam's residential manual advises limiting steam use to 10 to 15 minutes. Clearlight puts typical sessions at 20 to 45 minutes. If you are in for the session, the phone is in for the session.

A case makes this worse. It is insulation around a device whose only cooling path is its own surface, and Apple warns that charging inside certain styles of cases "may generate excess heat, which can affect battery capacity." A sealed pouch adds captive hot, humid air. Nothing you wrap around a phone edits its ambient operating specification.

The rule at the door

Life Time's Guest and Club Policy bars phones and smart glasses from photographic or video mode in any locker room, sauna or steam room, bars calls there, and requires headphones for audio. Planet Fitness prohibits photos, video and calls in locker rooms and its Black Card spa area, confining calls to the lobby. New York Sports Clubs warns that a breach can cost you sauna privileges or your membership.

None of that turns on what you are actually doing. A phone face-down on a cedar bench reads as a camera to the person opposite, who cannot check that it is running a countdown.

The setup I use instead

  1. The phone stays in the locker at room temperature, away from any wall it shares with the hot room.
  2. Time the session on the room's own equipment. Harvia's PC-series heaters carry a timer switch with a 0 to 4 hour on-time, and most cabins have a display or sand timer.
  3. For a countdown on your body, wear a watch you would replace, and read its environmental specification first.
  4. Leave the earbuds out. Apple is direct: don't wear AirPods in a sauna or steam room. IP54 on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 covers dust, sweat and splashes under IEC 60529, tested cool.
  5. Sort the audio before you undress. Where a speaker is allowed, start it from outside the room; where it is not, take the twenty minutes in silence.

If the phone has already been in

Power it off and keep it off charge. Apple states that charging a device in high ambient temperatures "can damage it further," and a hot battery on a charger is the combination worth avoiding.

Move it somewhere ordinary and let it settle. No fridge and no freezer, because fast cooling drives more condensation into the enclosure. Give it hours before you plug anything in.

Check the Liquid Contact Indicator in the SIM tray with a torch. White or silver means no recorded contact; red or pink means a documented liquid event, the first thing a service counter looks for. Write down today's Maximum Capacity and check again in a month, because one reading tells you nothing and two make a line.

If the back panel is bulging, the display is lifting along an edge, or the phone rocks on a flat table, that is battery swelling. Stop using it, do not charge it, and take it in.
